It’s tempting to create one “perfect” proposal and send it to every funder on your list. While building a “boilerplate bank” of standard answers is a smart starting point, customization is what actually wins grants.
Funders use specific vocabulary and have unique priorities. To stand out, you must repeat the exact language found in the funder’s Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) or guidelines. If a funder values “community cohesion,” your narrative should use those exact words to show how your goals mirror theirs.
Reviewers may read 80 or more applications; they deeply appreciate it when you answer their specific prompt directly in the very first sentence. When you “stretch” a project to fit a grant it wasn’t designed for, reviewers can tell. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, focus on mission alignment—tailoring every budget line and success story to prove that your work is the exact solution that particular funder is looking for.
