How to Build a Strong Grant Pipeline

A strong grant pipeline is the result of consistent, intentional prospect research, networking, and relationship building. You don’t want to wait for an opportunity to find you; you need to go out and identify leads that truly align with your mission.

There are several ways to consistently identify opportunities:

  • Internet Search Engines: Start simple with keywords like “Grants in [Your City]” or “[Your Mission] grants”.
  • Local Community Foundations: These public charities are dedicated to specific geographic areas and are excellent resources for local nonprofits.
  • Banks and Trust Centers: Financial institutions often serve as trustees for private family foundations and endowments that may not have their own websites.
  • Grant Databases: If you have the budget, tools like Foundation Directory, Instrumentl, or GrantStation provide robust search filters to help you find the perfect match.
  • Peer Networks: Don’t work in a silo. Ask your partners and colleagues who is funding their work. Building relationships and attending community roundtables can reveal “untapped resources” right at your fingertips.

Remember, once you find a prospect, the goal is to qualify them—ensuring their typical award amounts and funding categories fit your specific needs before you invest time in an application.
