One of the most frequent questions I receive is, “Should my organization be applying for grants?” While grants are a fantastic way to increase support for your mission, they aren’t “free money”. They require a significant investment of time and resources to prepare, administer, and report on. Before you dive in, you need to ensure your nonprofit is “grant ready.”
At Futureful Grants , we look for a few essential indicators of readiness. First, do you have your official 501(c)(3) status or a fiscal sponsor? Most grantmakers require this as a baseline for eligibility. Second, are you using professional financial software like QuickBooks to produce monthly reports, such as a Statement of Activities and a Statement of Financial Position? Funders want to see that you are fiscally responsible and can produce at least two years of financial statements and tax returns.
Finally, are you already measuring your impact? If you don’t have defined outcomes or a way to track the change your work creates, it may be too early to apply. Very small nonprofits with budgets under $50,000 often need to do some prep work to meet these standards before they can successfully compete for funding.
